A hit-and-run pursuit ended in a crash and an arrest Thursday morning in the Alexandria section of the Capital Beltway, according to Virginia State Police. The incident closed every southbound I-495 lane near Van Dorn Street, contributing to rush-hour backups reportedly stretching as far as 12 miles.
The third nationwide “No Kings” protest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28. More than 3,000 rallies are planned across all 50 states, including an event at the Washington Monument. Fairfax-area gatherings are set for Reston, Vienna, Fair Lakes, Fairfax City, Annandale, Burke, Franconia, Springfield and Fort Hunt.
Virginia’s proposed Equal Pay Act is awaiting action from the governor after years of unsuccessful attempts by Sen. Jennifer Boysko to advance similar legislation. Senate Bill 215 passed the General Assembly along party lines in February. Among its provisions, the measure would prohibit employers from asking applicants about pay history and require salary ranges in job advertisements.
The Washington, D.C., region added more than 50,000 residents last year despite a slowdown in international migration. New U.S. Census Bureau estimates put the regional population at 6.46 million as of July 1, 2025, marking a fourth consecutive year of growth. Fairfax County gained 0.7%, reaching 1,167,873 residents, while Fairfax City posted the region’s largest percentage increase, rising 2.82% to 26,772.
The National Geographic Museum of Exploration will open in Washington on June 26. The debut follows a yearslong, $300 million transformation of National Geographic’s 140-year-old campus near downtown D.C.
Westfield senior guard Jemon Price has been named the Virginia High School League Class 6 Boys Player of the Year, while Bulldogs head coach Kevin Harris earned Class 6 Coach of the Year honors. Harris, who has led the program since 2023, guided Westfield to a 30-1 season and its second state championship. The Bulldogs defeated Landstown 48-44 in the final this winter.
Cherry blossom season has also reached the Lego Discovery Center in Springfield. A miniature display inspired by the region’s flowering trees will remain available through April 30.
Two more dining choices are headed to the Wonder food hall at 11690 Plaza America Drive in Reston. Pop Salad, which specializes in full-sized salads, and the fast-casual El Diez Mexican Bowls are scheduled to arrive April 15.
Rain is expected throughout Friday, with temperatures falling to 49 degrees by 5 p.m. and north winds reaching 23 mph. The chance of rain is 80% during the day and 60% during the evening, with most precipitation ending before 7 p.m. Skies should become partly cloudy overnight as the temperature drops to 33 degrees.
