A crash on the Capital Beltway escalated into a deadly stabbing Sunday afternoon in Annandale, leaving one woman and a dog dead and three other women seriously injured, according to Virginia State Police.
The violence unfolded shortly before 1:30 p.m. March 1 in the southbound lanes of Interstate 495 near Exit 52 at Little River Turnpike.
Police identified the woman who died as Michelle Adams, 39, of Fairfax. Three other victims, ages 36, 37 and 40, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
A Virginia State Police trooper responding to the scene encountered Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean, who police said confronted the trooper with a knife. The trooper opened fire in self-defense, according to investigators.
Llamado was taken to a hospital and later died. The trooper was not injured and was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
Preliminary findings indicate the stabbings followed the Beltway crash, but police are still examining what happened. Authorities said the incident is not believed to be connected to terrorism.
The Capital Beltway’s Outer Loop main lanes approaching Little River Turnpike remained closed for several hours Sunday.
