A road-rage incident on the Capital Beltway left a Fairfax woman and a dog fatally stabbed before a Virginia state trooper shot and killed the suspected attacker Sunday afternoon.

Virginia State Police said the violence unfolded March 1 after a vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 495 at Exit 52, near Little River Turnpike.

Michele Adams, 39, died from her wounds. Three other women, ages 36, 37 and 40, were hospitalized with serious injuries. Police said the women did not know the attacker and were not traveling in his vehicle.

Investigators identified the suspect as Jared Llamado, 32, of McLean. Police said a trooper shot Llamado in self-defense after Llamado confronted him with a knife. Llamado later died at a hospital, while the trooper was not injured.

A dog belonging to Llamado was also stabbed to death, according to police.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that Llamado was a Foreign Service Officer. His LinkedIn profile indicated that he had worked for the department in a technology position for about a year and a half.

“We are aware of the tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service Officer and occurred on Sunday, March 1, in Fairfax County, Virginia. We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy,” a department spokesperson said.

The investigation closed the Capital Beltway’s Outer Loop main lanes before Little River Turnpike for several hours Sunday.

Police said Llamado was the only suspect and that the stabbings were not believed to be connected to terrorism.
