Officials across the Washington region are on heightened alert after bird flu outbreaks struck three poultry operations in Maryland and Delaware, affecting more than 500,000 chickens. Maryland reported an H5N1 case Friday, Jan. 10, after the virus was detected in a chicken in Caroline County.

Fairfax County Public Schools says it was not affected by a recent breach at K-12 technology vendor PowerSchool. Although FCPS uses PowerSchool services, it does not use the Student Information System compromised in the incident.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin outlined his priorities for his final year in office during the State of the Commonwealth address Monday morning. The speech and opening of the 2025 General Assembly session had been delayed while Richmond dealt with a water crisis.

Permanent bathrooms at several high school athletic stadiums along the Richmond Highway Corridor are expected to open this summer, according to FCPS leaders. The facilities have been anticipated for years.

A new bill from Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker and Sen. Danica Roem would provide free breakfast to public school students throughout Virginia. Bennett-Parker said the breakfast-only proposal would cost $43 million.

Cassidy Rajala, an Annandale sixth-grader diagnosed with leukemia in December 2023, has spent months in the hospital during a difficult year. Pop singer Benson Boone has provided a source of comfort during her treatment.

Northern Virginia Family Service has merged with Alexandria-based Stop Child Abuse Now of Northern Virginia. The combined organization will operate under the NVFS name and plans to expand assistance for children across the region.

Scattered flurries are possible after 4 p.m. Tuesday as clouds increase and temperatures reach a high near 32 degrees. Northwest winds of 9 to 11 mph could gust to 23 mph.

The flurries should end before 9 p.m., followed by partly cloudy skies and a low near 19. Northwest winds will strengthen to 13 to 16 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 30 mph.
