Hundreds of tenants at the Wedgewood apartments in Annandale have endured two days without heat or hot water while outdoor temperatures remained in the 20s. The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, which owns the complex, said water temperatures had been partially restored, but heating-system repairs were still underway Tuesday.

The cold has also increased demand at Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter. FACETS typically serves 18 people in permanent supportive housing and about 52 overnight guests there, but dozens more sought refuge after snow, sleet and plunging temperatures hit the area.

Elsewhere in Virginia, a Democratic push to redraw the state’s congressional map has stalled amid disagreement between the Senate and House of Delegates. Democrats in both chambers favor a map designed to produce 10 Democratic districts and one Republican district, but they have not agreed on its boundaries. Their self-imposed deadline to release a proposal passed last week.

Metro is marking civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks’ birthday on Wednesday, Feb. 4, by reserving one seat on every bus and train in its system. Signs will commemorate Parks’ refusal to surrender her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus and her subsequent arrest in 1955.

Fairfax County Democratic Sen. Saddam Salim is advocating for legislation that would allow courthouse visitors to bring in cell phones. A Virginia Senate panel approved the measure this week.

He said squirrels, birds and other local wildlife are adapted to survive these conditions and even colder weather.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies, a high near 33 degrees and a north wind around 9 mph. A 20% chance of snow is expected before 10 p.m., followed by mostly cloudy conditions that should gradually clear. The overnight low will be about 17 degrees.
