Fairfax County firefighters rushed to the Fairfax Yacht Club on Old Colchester Road in Lorton shortly after 1 a.m. March 30, finding a boathouse engulfed in flames and the fire spreading into nearby brush.
No injuries were reported. Fire investigators remained at the scene as of 6 a.m. to determine what caused the blaze.
Police seize drugs, cash and freeze accounts
Fairfax County police detectives and local and federal partners carried out search warrants March 18 at 13 Tobacco King locations, two storage units, a warehouse and three homes.
Authorities seized more than $2 million in narcotics, including 40 pounds of mushroom-infused gummies, unauthorized prescription medications and hundreds of pounds of marijuana in various forms. They also confiscated more than $500,000 in cash and froze 30 bank accounts.
The operation was led by detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department’s Organized Crime and Intelligence Bureau, with assistance from the DEA, ATF, Virginia State Police and several regional police departments.
Herndon officer helps young anglers
Herndon Police Officer Hank M. Ruffin helped children learn to fish during the Kids Trout Fishing Derby on Saturday, March 21.
The annual event took place along the Sugarland Run Trail stream behind the police station, where the water had been heavily stocked to give young participants a better chance of catching trout.
Ruffin, a longtime presence at the derby, taught children how to cast and identify trout. He said in 2019 that his goal was to “spark a lifelong love affair with the sport” and encourage a new generation of Herndon anglers.
Firearms seized from juveniles
Herndon Police Department bike-team members Corporal A. Cadang and Master Police Officer S. Scholl recently recovered firearms from juveniles in three separate cases.
In the first incident, police said a 17-year-old was charged with concealing a firearm and possessing a stolen semiautomatic weapon.
A second case involved a 15-year-old who allegedly had a ghost gun and an extended magazine. Charges included firearm possession by a minor, carrying a loaded firearm holding more than 20 rounds, obstruction of justice and marijuana possession.
In the third incident, a 16-year-old allegedly possessed a firearm stolen from Georgia. The juvenile was charged with firearm possession by a minor, concealment and resisting arrest.
Vienna selects new deputy police chief
David Huchler is scheduled to begin serving as the Town of Vienna’s deputy police chief on April 6. He brings 34 years of law enforcement experience to the position.
Vienna Police Chief Dan Janickey described Huchler as well qualified for a public-safety leadership role. He said Huchler’s record and experience working with regional partners will help the department respond to the needs of Vienna’s growing community.
