Vienna is expected to receive its first five Capital Bikeshare stations by mid-August, bringing 21 standard bicycles and four electric bicycles to locations around town and linking Vienna to the regional bikeshare network.

The planned stations are near the W&OD Trail and Navy Federal Credit Union; at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry Street SE; at Maple Avenue and Nutley Street; at 444 Maple Avenue W; and on Patrick Street SE near Park Street.

The Maple Avenue and Nutley Street station is intended to connect the bikeshare network with the Vienna Metro station. Andrew Jinks, a transportation engineer with the Town of Vienna, said the location was selected with that connection in mind.

“The station that’s located at the intersection of Nutley and Maple was strategically placed there to have a network connection to the Vienna metro station.”

Bikes rented at any of the Vienna stations can be returned to any Capital Bikeshare station in the metropolitan area. That regional flexibility would allow riders to use the system for trips within Vienna or to travel between Vienna and other communities served by the network.

The project is also intended to provide an alternative to short car trips within town. Jinks said, “One of the goals is to provide an alternative form of transportation within the town and instead of making a short car trip, someone could take a bike.”

Fairfax County will administer bicycle and station operations and maintenance through a multijurisdictional contract with Lyft. Lyft manages Capital Bikeshare in eight jurisdictions in the Washington, D.C., area.

Fairfax County staff found that a typical electric-bike ride lasts about 15 minutes and covers about 2.2 miles. Those figures provide an indication of the short-trip use the Vienna stations are intended to support, although individual rides may vary.

The expansion follows additional Capital Bikeshare growth in Fairfax County during 2026. In May, the system added 27 stations in several communities, including Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners, Belle Haven, Huntington and the Mount Vernon Trail.

The idea of expanding Capital Bikeshare into Vienna had been discussed since at least 2019. The Town of Vienna received final project approvals last July, according to the project account. The current plan calls for installation by mid-August 2026, but an exact installation date has not been provided.
