A Honda Accord flew off Interstate 66 and landed on Metro tracks near the Dunn Loring-Merrifield station Wednesday after its driver reached for an E-ZPass device, Virginia State Police said.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews responded at 11:24 a.m. to the crash along westbound I-66, just before the Cedar Lane overpass.
According to the initial police investigation, the driver reached down to retrieve the device and veered off the left side of the highway. The car then traveled onto a mound of snow and ice that acted as a ramp, sending it airborne, through a fence and onto the adjacent tracks.
The driver suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. Police charged the driver with reckless driving.
The crash halted Orange Line service in both directions between West Falls Church and Vienna for more than two hours. Metro began single-tracking trains between the stations around 1:40 p.m., but riders continued to face delays.
The westbound I-66 HOV lane was also temporarily closed.
