Chantilly Academy cosmetology students put their classroom training to work by helping peers prepare for Day Prom, continuing a service tradition now in its second year.

Cosmetology 2 students styled hair for students in the Category B program, which serves students with intellectual disabilities. The collaboration gave the aspiring cosmetologists practical experience while helping their classmates get ready for the celebration.

Day Prom was held at the Crystal View near Fair Oaks Mall and brought together students from about 10 Fairfax County Public Schools for music and dancing. Crystal View donated the venue, while participating schools contributed decorations.

The partnership began as a work-based learning arrangement. Category B students collect, wash and fold towels used in the academy’s salon classroom, building life and workplace skills in the process.

The relationship expanded last year after a teacher asked whether cosmetology students could help Category B students prepare for Day Prom. The makeover session has since become a recurring part of the partnership.

Senior Addison Ondrick styled curls for a student named Mia.

“I love helping out with this event since it brings a smile to so many people’s faces,” Ondrick said. “She wanted curls and was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. I hope she has a great prom!”

Senior Yuliana Ramirez-Montoya styled another student’s hair with an outline and slicked-back look.

“He looked amazing!” Ramirez-Montoya said. “I’m so glad I helped out and had a great time doing it.”

The service project came as the Cosmetology 2 students prepared for their state board exams and worked toward becoming licensed cosmetologists.
