Democratic Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker won Tuesday’s special election by a wide margin over Republican Julie Robben Lineberry. The victory positions Bennett-Parker to replace Sen. Adam Ebbin, who is joining Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration.
The Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office fired senior deputy prosecutor Eric Clingan on Jan. 12, days before the murder trial of Brendan Banfield began. Clingan had been cited for drinking in public and removed from the high-profile case. He called his termination wrongful and unfair and said he is pursuing litigation.
Fairfax County detectives are renewing their request for help solving the killing of Ronald Worthy Jr. more than four years after his death. Worthy, a 19-year-old Virginia State University student, was found with apparent gunshot wounds on July 27, 2021, inside the Groveton apartment where he was spending the summer with his grandmother.
The D.C. region’s rock-hard snow and ice should finally begin a gradual retreat. Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing each day for the foreseeable future, with some readings potentially reaching the 50s or higher next week.
New data centers and other high-energy-use facilities could be required to shoulder more of the expense of serving them under legislation advanced Monday, Feb. 9, by the Virginia Senate Commerce and Labor Committee. State Sen. Louise Lucas added the proposal to her bill, which had initially centered on energy-assistance programs and an effort to make Dominion Energy place power lines underground. Any cost changes would require approval from state regulators.
Programs from the Culmore Community Library are moving to Culmore Church in Bailey’s Crossroads while the library undergoes an HVAC replacement. The facility is not expected to reopen until January 2027. Updated plans call for a temporary program space without books, according to Fairfax County Public Library communications director Sara Prohaska.
At Hunters Woods Elementary School in Reston, sixth graders are continuing a decades-old tradition of creating permanent artwork with a local artist. The PTA-funded artist-in-residence program gives students a chance to leave work in the school’s library, hallways or outdoor spaces before advancing to middle school.
