Driftwood will bring two decades of musical chemistry—and a preview of its next album—to Jammin’ Java on April 17.

The folk-rock band plans to perform songs from across its catalog during the 8 p.m. show, including selections from “Tree of Shade” and “December Last Call.” Bassist Joey Arcuri said the set will also feature several unreleased tracks from a record now in progress.

Fans can expect the close musical connection Driftwood has developed through long friendships and years of performing together. Arcuri joined 16 years ago, while founding members Joe Kollar and Dan Forsyth began playing together as teenagers in Binghamton, New York.

The lineup grew to include violinist Claire Byrne, Arcuri and drummer Sam Fishman. Together, the five musicians blend folk and bluegrass influences with electric arrangements and improvisational passages.

“December Last Call,” the band’s latest album, brought Driftwood back to the basement where the group first took shape. Its songs move between acoustic sections and more forceful electric sounds, revisiting the band’s beginnings while expanding its style.

Driftwood is taking a slower, more gradual approach to its next recording. The group laid down basic tracks in Woodstock, New York, and is adding overdubs and other refinements at Kollar’s home studio. That process is giving the musicians more time to develop each song.

The Jammin’ Java appearance will be Driftwood’s third visit to the venue. Arcuri said he especially enjoyed the bass sound during previous performances there.

Table seating and the intimate room are expected to put greater emphasis on the band’s lyrics, storytelling and interplay, though Driftwood’s jam-oriented energy will remain part of the show. Arcuri described the group’s sound as a meeting point for listeners who favor extended instrumental performances and those drawn to folk songwriting.

Longtime favorites such as the sing-along track “The Sun’s Going Down” have become staples of Driftwood’s shows, but the band’s large catalog and emerging material mean its set lists can vary from one performance to another.
