A 56-year-old man was killed and three other drivers, including a Fairfax County police officer, were injured in a four-vehicle crash near George Mason University on Friday afternoon.
Police responded at about 1:09 p.m. to the collision at Braddock Road and Campus Drive in Fairfax. The crash involved a county police cruiser and three other vehicles.
Investigators believe three vehicles were idling at a traffic light when a black car approached at high speed while being driven erratically. The car struck the police cruiser from behind, pushing it into the two vehicles ahead, Fairfax County police Capt. Jesse Katzman said.
The driver of the black car died in the crash. The other three drivers were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police are investigating and have asked anyone with information or dash-camera footage to contact the department.
Braddock Road was closed in both directions near Campus Drive and Prestwick Drive following the crash. Motorists were urged to use caution and follow officers’ directions.
