A large barn at Cox Farms burned to the ground early Sunday, killing multiple chickens and destroying several familiar farm attractions.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and the Loudoun Fire Department responded around 4:30 a.m. Feb. 2 to the farm in the 15600 block of Braddock Road in Centreville. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming through the barn’s roof and quickly began battling the blaze.
No civilians or firefighters were injured. The fire was contained to the barn, but a tractor, the popular warm-weather fun slide and the iconic sunflower decorating the building were destroyed.
Leona, a mother pig that lives in the barn during the fall season, was not there and was unharmed. Farm caretaker Sam spotted the fire and immediately reported it, according to a social media post.
Fire investigators are working to determine what caused the blaze.
Cox Farms has not announced rebuilding plans, though some people have suggested holding an old-fashioned barn raising.
