Fairfax County police shot and wounded a man in woods near Sutter Lane in Annandale on July 28 after responding to a domestic violence call, according to Police Chief Kevin Davis.

A woman called 911 shortly before 10 a.m. from the 7000 block of Sutter Lane, reporting that her husband was threatening her while holding two knives and harming himself, police said. When officers arrived, the woman identified a man running from the home as her husband.

Police searched for approximately 15 minutes in a wooded area where they believed he had fled, deploying a K-9 unit and establishing a perimeter. “Our police officers searched actually for about 15 good minutes before they located the suspect,” Davis said.

According to Davis, the man emerged abruptly from a bush and grabbed the firearm of a second lieutenant with 13 years of department experience. “Our suspect takes his right hand, he grabs the firearm that the police officer had in his hand,” Davis said. “It took the officer two hands to pull his firearm back from our suspect.”

The officer fired three rounds. One round grazed the man’s upper-right shoulder without creating an entry wound, Davis said. “There was no entry wound for the bullet, but it grazed what I believe is his upper right shoulder.”

According to police, the response by a second officer during the encounter differed in reports from two news outlets. Police recovered two knives the man had carried into the woods. Davis said police located the knives after reviewing footage from neighborhood security cameras registered with the department, with about 30 cameras registered in the area.

The man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he was expected to face charges including felony assault against a police officer and attempting to disarm an officer, with possible additional charges related to the domestic call. Charges had not been adjudicated at the time of reporting.

Davis said the man was known to the criminal justice system and had a documented history of domestic violence involving his wife, though these details remain unverified by independent sources.

No officers were injured, according to police. The identities of the man and the officers involved have not been publicly disclosed. Both officers were placed on administrative leave pending investigation, police said.

Multiple body-worn cameras captured the encounter. Davis said he had reviewed the footage extensively and that body-camera video would be released within 30 days in accordance with department policy. The police account of events has not yet been independently corroborated by publicly released footage.
