Fairfax County public schools will close Tuesday, April 21, 2026, when 168 school buildings serve as polling locations for a statewide constitutional amendment special election.
The Virginia Department of Elections expects high voter turnout across the Commonwealth. Keeping schools open would require public access to parts of the buildings throughout the day, disrupting normal operations and making it harder to maintain a secure learning environment.
The closure will also prevent conflicts involving cafeterias, gyms, parking lots and other areas needed by both voters and schools. It will allow polling facilities to remain fully accessible and prepared for Election Day.
Despite the closure, students will still receive more than the number of instructional hours required by the Virginia Department of Education.
