Former Fairfax County high school basketball players are making major contributions to two nationally recognized Division III programs during the 2024-25 season.
West Springfield High graduate McKenzie Matheny has helped the Randolph-Macon College women reach 17-1 and win 16 consecutive games through Jan. 29.
The 5-foot-11 junior forward ranks second on the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 11.3 points per game and rebounding at 7.1 per game. Through 18 appearances, she also has recorded 22 blocks, 18 steals and 18 assists.
Matheny delivered her biggest performance of the season in a recent victory over Virginia Wesleyan University. She scored 31 points on 15-of-18 shooting while adding eight rebounds, three blocks and an assist.
Westfield High graduate Bella Bruce has also played a significant role for the Randolph-Macon women. The sophomore guard has started all 18 games, averaging 6.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. She has made 19 three-pointers and blocked 19 shots.
On the men’s side, Langley High graduate Amr Areikat has helped Randolph-Macon compile a 16-3 record and a 13-game winning streak. The Yellow Jackets were ranked No. 13 nationally by d3hoops.com after their latest win, also against Virginia Wesleyan.
Areikat, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, starts for the Yellow Jackets and ranks third on the team with 10.1 points per game. He averages 3.2 rebounds and has contributed 43 assists, the second-highest total on the roster, along with 12 steals and 25 three-pointers.
His best game of the season included 18 points, six assists and five made three-pointers.
Fairfax County players are also producing for Virginia Wesleyan despite its recent losses to Randolph-Macon.
South County High graduate Paul Anderson has started every game for the Virginia Wesleyan men, who hold a 15-4 record and a No. 25 national ranking. The 6-foot-3 sophomore guard averages seven points and four rebounds per game and has collected 31 steals in 18 contests.
Fellow South County graduate Keagan Schwab has started 17 games for the Virginia Wesleyan women. The fifth-year, 5-foot-8 guard averages 11.1 points and 2.8 rebounds and has connected on 29 three-pointers.
Schwab has scored 976 points during her college career. She recorded 787 over three seasons at Division III University of Mary Washington after beginning her career at Division I American University, where she appeared in two games.
Across her Division III career, Schwab has started 81 of 82 games.
