Fairfax County Students Return as New School Year Gets Underway

Students across Fairfax County returned to classrooms on Aug. 18, beginning the 2025-26 school year with greetings from teachers, administrators and classmates.

Students across Fairfax County returned to classrooms on Aug. 18, beginning the 2025-26 school year with greetings from teachers, administrators and classmates.

Fairfax County Public Schools thanked employees and families for preparing schools and students for opening day. Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid had welcomed the school community in a message shared the previous day, highlighting additions for the new year, including girls’ flag football.

Officials asked families for patience as students and drivers adjust to new transportation routines. Parents and caregivers can check the Bus Delay Notification System or the Here Comes the Bus app for updates. Email alerts are sent when buses are delayed by at least 30 minutes, provided families have current contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

The Fairfax County Police Department also urged drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to take extra care around students traveling to and from school, including using helmets when appropriate and following school drop-off procedures.
