Fairfax County drivers will face heightened traffic enforcement beginning April 20 as police revive a campaign targeting speeding, reckless driving and other dangerous behavior.

The first wave of the Road Shark initiative will run through April 26, with officers conducting focused enforcement in areas known for speeding. The effort coincides with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Police say the campaign is intended to prevent crashes, deaths and serious injuries while improving safety for everyone using county roads.

Road Shark returns after a major enforcement push in 2025 produced nearly 50,000 citations and warnings. More than 9,000 were issued during the opening week alone.

That first wave also resulted in nearly three dozen arrests for intoxicated driving and ultimately more than 100 felony charges against motorists.

The campaign’s 2025 totals were considerably higher than the previous year, when officers issued approximately 35,000 citations and warnings. About 5,700 of those came during the first week.

Officers will also take part in the national “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” campaign against distracted driving. Police are additionally promoting the “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different” initiative, which discourages driving while impaired by alcohol or other substances.

The stepped-up enforcement comes as warmer weather brings more motorists, cyclists and pedestrians onto Fairfax County roads.

More than 2,000 crashes have been recorded in the county so far this year, according to state data. Roughly one in four was reported as speed-related.
