Fairfax County General District Court is warning residents about a fraudulent mass text posing as an official toll-violation hearing notice.
The message reached a significant number of people around the morning of March 3, 2026. Court officials said they did not send it and identified it as an attempted scam.
In Herndon, Fairfax County firefighters responded to the 900 block of Leona Lane at 3:41 p.m. following reports of smoke inside a home. Crews found smoke coming from the two-story residence and quickly extinguished a fire in a second-floor bedroom. No residents or firefighters were injured.
Santosh Basnet, the sole survivor of a domestic stabbing in Mantua, is recovering in the hospital after four surgeries. Basnet, who is covered in stitches, said he continues to remember his wife’s final cries for help. The violence unfolded after the family tried to provide his father-in-law with a fresh start.
Virginia lawmakers are also considering measures aimed at making child care more affordable. The state Senate’s proposed budget includes $3 million to phase out Child Care Subsidy Program eligibility gradually, preventing some families from losing assistance immediately after a pay increase. Both House and Senate budget proposals also fund a pilot program encouraging employers to help cover workers’ child care costs.
Fairfax-area Sen. Saddam Salim, a Democrat representing District 37, is advancing legislation intended to establish a path for autonomous trucking and ride-hailing services in Virginia. Salim said the proposal could help businesses such as Waymo operate in the state, though it would not settle every policy question surrounding self-driving vehicles.
The General Assembly passed a proposal Monday addressing how schools teach the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. If schools cover the event, the measure would require them to present the facts without repeating misinformation that the 2020 presidential election was stolen or portraying the attack as merely a peaceful protest.
In Annandale, Turkish and Middle Eastern dessert and coffee shop Pasha Castle has opened at 7228 Columbia Pike after moving from M Street in Georgetown. Its offerings include booza, a Middle Eastern ice cream known for its stretchy, chewy texture.
Riverbend Fútbol Club is launching this spring in Great Falls with an emphasis on keeping youth soccer enjoyable and reconnecting the community with local athletics. Registration is open for recreational programs and summer-league tryouts, while competitive-program tryouts are scheduled to begin in March.
A restaurant has also filed a legal notice seeking an alcohol license for on- and off-premises sales. Objections are due within 30 days.
