Fairfax County is considering 14 new Capital Bikeshare stations along the I-66 corridor, extending service from Centreville to Dunn Loring and giving trail users more places to pick up and return bicycles.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation presented the proposed expansion during a virtual information session Wednesday, April 8. The county is accepting public feedback on the locations through May 1.
The stations would be installed near the I-66 Parallel Trail and would be smaller than many existing locations. Each would offer seven or eight pillar-style docks equipped with individual solar panels and improved locking mechanisms.
Capital Bikeshare is jointly owned by Fairfax and Arlington counties; Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax cities; Washington, D.C.; and Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland. Lyft operates the regional network, which has about 800 stations.
Fairfax County currently has 94 stations, and riders made more than 40,000 trips in the county during 2025. Officials already plan to add 27 stations this year in Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners, Mount Vernon and Belle View. The Town of Vienna expects to install its first stations this summer.
The county has secured $510,000 for the I-66 corridor stations through the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission’s I-66 Commuter Choice grant program.
County transportation planner Hannah Cacner said staff selected the proposed sites, but the locations still need permit approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation. Because that process has not begun, she said the county retains some flexibility to adjust the final placements.
After public input closes, the supervisor representing each proposed station area will make the final decision on its location. Nine stations are in Supervisor Dalia Palchik’s Providence District, four are in Supervisor Rachna Heizer’s Braddock District and one is in Supervisor Pat Herrity’s Springfield District.

- Legato and Dixie Hill roads
- Monument Drive Transit Center
- Government Center Parkway and Ridge Top Road
- The entrance to the Fairfax County Government Center
- Chain Bridge Road and Viera Lane
- Bushman Drive and the I-66 Parallel Trail
- Blake Lane and Platten Drive
- The north side of the Vienna Metro station
- Providence Place, formerly Pan Am Shopping Center, along Route 29
- Gallows Road and Strawberry Lane
- Gallows Road and Providence Forest Drive
- Gallows Road and Electric Avenue
- Route and Hollywood Road
- The Fairfax County Department of Transportation near Legato Road and Halstead Street
