Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Captain Barry Maham died Monday, March 31, 2025, from occupational cancer after a 25-year career marked by disaster-response missions at home and around the world.
Maham joined the department as a firefighter in 1999. He became a dedicated member of its urban search and rescue team, deploying when disasters struck locally and internationally.
He recently retired to focus on battling repeated recurrences of cancer. Within the department, Maham was remembered as a leader, mentor and friend whose service left a lasting impact on colleagues and the Fairfax County community.
His commitment to helping others continued outside the fire department. Maham volunteered with Veterans Fishing Adventures, a nonprofit that provides free fishing trips to disabled veterans.
Maham is survived by his wife, Amber; his children, Bryce, Makayla, Makenna, Brittian and Trevor; Bryce’s wife, Samantha; and his grandson, Maverick. He also leaves behind extended family, friends and many others whose lives he touched.
