A Northern Virginia search-and-rescue team is deploying to Texas after catastrophic flooding left more than 120 people dead or missing, while Fairfax County schools face uncertainty over millions of dollars in frozen federal funding.
Capt. Marc Campet, search team leader for Virginia Task Force 1, is leading personnel from Fairfax and Montgomery counties to assist with flood response. The team departed Friday evening and expected to be ready for work Saturday morning.
Fairfax County Public Schools could also lose access to more than $13 million while the U.S. Department of Education reviews federal grants. Superintendent Michelle Reid said she learned of the freeze through a message from Virginia’s state superintendent’s office. School leaders warned that the delay could affect teachers and multilingual learners.
In Vienna, the July 1997 killings of Bobby and Patricia Quisenberry remain unsolved 28 years later. Their son, Clint Quisenberry, said he saw his parents shortly before investigators believe they were shot after midnight during a random burglary at their home.

Virginia could receive as much as $16.4 million through a $720 million multistate settlement with eight generic drug manufacturers accused of contributing to the opioid crisis. Attorney General Jason Miyares announced the agreement Thursday.
Semicolon Cafe opened in late June at 103 Founders Avenue in Falls Church. The New York City-based Korean cafe chain serves drinks and pastries, and the new shop is its only Virginia location. A previous Semicolon location inside a Chantilly food hall closed about a year and a half ago.

Two Reston pools will have delayed openings for routine maintenance. North Shore Pool is scheduled to open at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, one hour later than usual. Lake Newport Pool is expected to open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, a five-hour delay.
Monday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies, a high near 89 and a 70% chance of precipitation after 2 p.m. Rain chances rise to 80% Monday night, when the temperature is expected to fall to around 73.
