Fairfax County Public Schools is reporting stronger teacher retention, while changes at George Mason University’s law school, a pending traffic-camera bill and several local openings are drawing attention Wednesday, Feb. 26.

For the first time in four years, more than 90% of FCPS teachers are staying with the school system following efforts to address retention concerns. The district also has between 4,500 and 5,000 substitute teachers.

George Mason University’s law school has removed webpages connected to diversity, equity and inclusion, prompting criticism from students and uncertainty about related programs. Some students at the Antonin Scalia Law School recently sent administrators a letter questioning the changes and urging the school to reaffirm its commitment to diversity.

Virginia lawmakers reached a last-minute compromise on traffic-camera legislation before the General Assembly session ended. The measure would introduce high-tech cameras in school zones while establishing guardrails for speed-camera use. Its fate now depends on Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s approval.

George Mason’s men’s basketball team remains in contention for an NCAA Tournament berth. Both George Mason and VCU could reach the tournament even with setbacks in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. VCU defeated the Patriots last week for its sixth consecutive victory, ending George Mason’s 11-game winning streak.

Hi/Fi Tex-Mex BBQ is preparing to open a Mosaic District location at 8298 Glass Alley in Fairfax. A soft opening is planned for Wednesday, followed by the official opening at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1.

Fort Belvoir has reopened Walker Gate along Mount Vernon Memorial Highway during weekday mornings as part of gate changes that took effect Feb. 24. The gate had been closed since late November 2022 because of staffing shortages.

Reston Association recreation passes for the 2025 season are now available. The passes provide access to association pools and tennis and pickleball courts. They are again included for all members at no additional charge beyond the annual assessment.

Wednesday’s forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 63 degrees. A west wind of 6 to 8 mph will turn south during the afternoon. Clouds will increase overnight as temperatures fall to around 49, with a south wind continuing at 6 to 8 mph.
