Fairfax County Public Schools canceled most outdoor activities on school grounds from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 12, as dangerous heat and humidity threatened to push the heat index to about 105 degrees.

The cancellation covers recess, extracurricular activities and recreational programs operated by community groups on FCPS fields and courts. The school system took the same precaution Thursday.

High school athletic practices and competitions may continue at the discretion of certified athletic trainers monitoring conditions. Superintendent Michelle Reid said teams would notify families directly about any changes.

FCPS guidance calls for outdoor practices, scrimmages and competitions to be delayed when temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

The National Weather Service placed Fairfax County and parts of Maryland and Virginia under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Temperatures across the Washington region were forecast to reach as high as 97 degrees, with humidity making conditions feel closer to 105.

Fairfax County also activated its Heat Plan. County staff and nonprofit outreach workers are distributing bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent and other supplies to people without shelter. Supplies are also available at designated cooling centers, including libraries and community centers.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid direct sunlight and check on relatives and neighbors. Anyone who must be outdoors should wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and schedule strenuous activity for the early morning or evening.

Officials urged residents to recognize symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and act quickly if signs of heat-related illness appear.
