Fairfax County Public Schools is expanding efforts to address the emotional, behavioral, mental and physical health needs that can prevent students from succeeding in the classroom.

Bethany Demers, an educational specialist in Student Mental Health, helps lead that work by coordinating with students, families, school staff and community partners. Her efforts focus on reducing stigma, improving access to mental health services and creating school environments where students feel safe, connected and able to trust their teachers.

Demers also develops suicide prevention and intervention strategies and works to strengthen partnerships with community organizations. Her approach reflects the school system’s broader emphasis on student health and well-being under Goal 2 of its Strategic Plan.

Colleagues credit Demers with developing and coordinating numerous initiatives designed to reduce social and emotional barriers to learning. Mike Axler, director of Intervention and Prevention Services in Special Services, said her work has made a lasting impact across the school system.

Demers has worked for FCPS for 16 years, beginning her career as a school psychologist. She was named a finalist for Outstanding Nonschool-Based Professional Employee in 2025.
