Fairfax County Public Schools will reopen Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, on a two-hour delay after four consecutive snow days extended the district’s two-week winter break.
Superintendent Michelle Reid said the delayed opening will allow students, buses and walkers to travel after sunrise as ice and snow continue to affect some secondary roads following the Jan. 6 storm.
The Virginia Department of Transportation planned to work through the night and into Friday morning to improve road conditions. Reid urged student drivers to travel cautiously or consider taking the bus.
Most classes and offices will resume under the delayed schedule, with several exceptions:
- Morning special education preschool classes and morning field trips are canceled.
- Afternoon preschool classes will begin at their usual time.
- Full-day special education preschool and Early Head Start/Pre-K classes will begin two hours late.
- Transportation is canceled for morning high school academy classes but will be available for academy classes beginning after 12:45 p.m.
- Adult High School and GED courses will start two hours late, while Adult and Community Education classes will begin on time.
- Homebound and home-based instruction will begin at 10 a.m.
- School Age Child Care centers will open at 8 a.m.
- Central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m.
Reid thanked employees who prepared schools for reopening and assembled and distributed meal kits during the closures. She acknowledged that some roads, sidewalks and bus stops may remain covered and advised families to make decisions based on their local conditions.
