Fairfax County Public Schools has revised, dropped or delayed several proposed attendance boundary changes following extensive public feedback.

Superintendent Michelle Reid released the amended recommendations last week ahead of a final public hearing scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22. After the first hearing on Jan. 10, Reid said some proposals needed more time.

“It’s clear that we need to phase the recommendations to be thoughtful for all of our communities,” she said.

The division-wide boundary review began in fall 2024 after the school board adopted a policy requiring the superintendent to reevaluate school boundaries every five years.

The plan represents FCPS’ first district-wide boundary overhaul in 40 years. Officials are seeking to address complications created by years of piecemeal changes, including split feeder patterns and attendance islands assigned to schools without a geographic connection.

Changes involving Keene Mill, Cardinal Forest and White Oaks elementary schools in Springfield have been postponed until January 2027 for additional study. The original proposal would have eliminated a Keene Mill attendance island by dividing it between Cardinal Forest and White Oaks.

Two Rolling Valley Elementary attendance areas would still move to Saratoga Elementary, but a proposed transfer of a third area will be studied for January 2027.

Reid also withdrew a proposal to move one attendance area from Crossfield Elementary to Lees Corner Elementary.

The planned redistricting involving Glasgow Middle School has been substantially reduced. Only one area would now move from Glasgow to Poe Middle School. The earlier proposal called for three areas to shift to Poe and three others to Holmes Middle School.

Additional Glasgow boundary changes involving Beech Tree and Belvedere elementary schools will be considered in 2027.

FCPS also narrowed its proposal for Justice, Annandale and Falls Church high schools. Annandale has been removed from the plan, leaving one area with 46 students scheduled to move from Justice to Falls Church.

Students opposed some of the changes during an overflow public hearing last week that also covered the school division’s proposed capital improvement plan.

Willow Rosenthal, a junior at Justice High School, said changing schools as students prepare to apply to colleges would be unfair.

“This is the last thing that I and my fellow students need to be worrying about right now,” she said.

The revisions also include a new recommendation to transfer one attendance area with fewer than 10 students from Franklin Middle School to Rocky Run Middle School. Reid said the change had previously been approved but was paused during a separate study of boundaries for the new Western High School.

Another new recommendation calls for further study of Lewis and West Springfield high schools for possible future boundary adjustments.

The revised redistricting plan is estimated to affect 1,697 students: 859 elementary school students, 364 middle school students and 474 high school students.

The final public hearing is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road in Merrifield.
