Fairfax County Public Schools will dismiss students three hours early Tuesday, Feb. 11, as a winter storm threatens to disrupt the evening commute and create hazardous road conditions.

All schools and offices will close early. Morning and afternoon preschool special education classes are canceled, while full-day preschool special education, Early Childhood Education and Head Start classes will dismiss three hours ahead of their usual times.

All late buses and activities in schools or on school grounds are canceled. That includes extracurricular activities, athletic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, training courses, Adult and Community Education classes, recreation programs and use by outside groups.

School Age Child Care centers will open when schools dismiss for children enrolled in after-school sessions. The centers will close at 6:15 p.m., though county officials urged families to collect their children as soon as possible because roads could become dangerous.

A National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday and remain in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12. Forecasts called for 4 to 8 inches of snow as of 2:52 p.m.

The National Park Service plans to close the northern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in McLean at midnight so crews can treat the roadway.

The Virginia Department of Transportation warned that the storm will likely affect Tuesday evening’s rush hour and both commuting periods Wednesday. The agency advised residents to avoid driving during the storm as crews brine and treat roads.
