A second Edison High School student has been charged in connection with a gun found at the school, while new figures show pedestrian fatalities remain elevated across the Washington region.
Fairfax County police arrested a 17-year-old student Friday, Feb. 21, alleging the teenager shared possession of the same firearm that prompted the arrest of a 16-year-old student one day earlier. The older student faces charges of possessing and brandishing a firearm on school property.
Pedestrians in the D.C. area are now twice as likely to be killed as they were a decade ago. More than 100 pedestrian deaths were recorded across the region in 2024, marking the third consecutive year the toll exceeded that level despite pledges from local officials to improve street safety.
In Florida, authorities arrested a 20-year-old Fairfax County man accused of assaulting and strangling the mother of his child during a Feb. 12 incident. Investigators said the couple’s 13-day-old baby was dropped during the fight and left in the snow.
Fairfax City has opened a public housing survey that will remain available through March 15. Responses will inform the city’s Affordable Housing and Homelessness Strategic Plan, which is scheduled for release in June.
A traveling museum commemorating Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence is stationed at George Washington’s Mount Vernon through Feb. 26. The free, 11,000-square-foot VA250 Mobile Museum Experience has two rooms and is located in the estate’s west visitor parking lot.
Sacramento Center, a Woodlawn shopping property at 8792 Sacramento Drive, has been listed for sale. Located along Richmond Highway near Mount Vernon Country Club, the center is almost 99% leased and includes a standalone Chipotle that opened in September.
Gunston Head Spa opened Feb. 19 at Gunston Plaza in Lorton. Operated by the same owners as nearby Gunston Massage, the business offers specialized head, scalp and hair treatments along with skin care and massage services.
Vienna native Sam Gjormand has been promoted to a Division I baseball general manager role at the College of Charleston. She is the first woman to serve as a Division I baseball general manager and only the second person to hold that position in the division’s history.
