Fairfax County Public Schools students earned 196 honors in the 2025 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards, including 24 Gold Keys that automatically advanced to national consideration.
The students were recognized with Gold Keys, Silver Keys and honorable mentions for work spanning poetry, journalism, critical essays, memoirs, dramatic scripts, humor, novels, short stories, flash fiction, portfolios, and science fiction and fantasy.
Langley High School student Michaela Frey received an additional distinction as an American Voices Nominee for her Gold Key-winning poem, “MY HUSBAND AND I TRAVEL.” She also earned a Silver Key for the flash fiction piece “ORTHOGRAPHY & MIRRORS” and an honorable mention for the poem “warm currents to the iridescent sky.”
Gold Key recipients represented middle and high schools across Fairfax County, with winning pieces exploring subjects ranging from family, identity and immigration to democracy, technology, medicine and media representation.
Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the nation’s largest and longest-running recognition program of its kind.
