Student advocates from Falls Church and McLean high schools are taking their environmental concerns beyond the classroom, speaking to local leaders about solar power and community change.
During an Earth Day episode of Our Voices, Our Future released April 27, the students discussed environmental science and solar advocacy with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid.
For some, the issue is deeply personal. Leem, who moved to the United States from the Maldives, described how rising seas threaten her home country. Nadia explained that higher temperatures and pollution make it harder for her to enjoy time outdoors.
The students have pursued their advocacy through Get2Green clubs, presenting their ideas to the Fairfax County School Board and local parent-teacher associations. Their work connects lessons in science with efforts to influence decisions in the wider community.
Reid said Fairfax places particular importance on helping students develop their voices and learn to advocate strategically.
The students encouraged their peers not to be afraid to speak up, emphasizing that even one voice can help create change.
