Student advocates from Falls Church and McLean high schools are taking environmental concerns beyond the classroom, promoting solar energy and other changes across Fairfax County Public Schools.
The students discussed their work with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid during an Earth Day episode of “Our Voices, Our Future” released April 27.
For Leem, who moved to the United States from the Maldives, climate advocacy is rooted in the threat that rising seas pose to her home nation. Nadia said increasing temperatures and pollution have affected her ability to enjoy spending time outdoors.
Through Get2Green clubs, the students have brought their environmental advocacy to the School Board and local PTAs, connecting lessons in science with efforts to produce community change.
“If this tiny solar panel can do that, just think about what all of these panels can do,” one student said.
Reid said Fairfax places particular importance on student voices and on helping young people learn to advocate strategically, not simply loudly.
The students encouraged their peers not to be afraid to speak up, arguing that even one voice can make a difference.
