Female wrestlers from 20 Fairfax County high schools secured spots at the Zone 4 qualifying event for the Virginia High School League girls state tournament.
The top five competitors in each weight class advanced at Hayfield Secondary School, with fifth-place finishers named as alternates. The state tournament is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 26-27, at the Henrico Sports and Events Center in Glen Allen.
The public-school competition brings together wrestlers from Classes 1 through 6.
Oakton and Westfield led the county with five qualifiers apiece. West Springfield advanced four wrestlers, while Falls Church, Woodson and Marshall each had three.
Oakton produced two weight-class champions: Allison Hegg at 114 pounds and Hana Coutts at 145. Katherine Crockett placed second at 126, Katherine Donohue finished fourth at 165 and Eleanor Sanderson took fifth at 138.
Westfield’s Zoe Rodriguez won at 120, while Raya Fowle captured the 132-pound title. Stephanie Rodriquez placed third at 138. Alize Benitez finished fifth at 120, and Sophia Alcocer was fifth at 126.
Herndon’s lone qualifier, Eja Gatewood, won the 235-pound division. Jefferson’s only qualifier, Jayelle Jones, took first at 126.
West Springfield advanced Gabrielle Garvey, who placed third at 107; Elaina Primozic, third at 165; Claire Bowman, fourth at 114; and Gabriela Song, fourth at 138.
Marshall’s three qualifiers all finished second: Jennah ElBardicy at 107, Ava Wise at 138 and Kade McKeever at 185.
Falls Church’s Maliha Baig placed fourth at 100, Abigail Romero finished fourth at 107 and Isabela Pires took fifth at 107.
For Woodson, Nimmar Al-Hussieni placed second at 132, Danielle Hyder finished fourth at 132 and Serena ManCuso took fifth at 165.
Robinson advanced Samantha Gray, who placed third at 114, and Chanity Brooks, who finished fourth at 120. Edison’s qualifiers were Aya Boudad, third at 145, and Maggie Rowland, third at 185.
Other wrestlers earning state berths were Hayfield’s Briana Lemon, third at 152; South County’s Kaitlyn McEntee, third at 235; South Lakes’ Lila Jaster, second at 152; Annandale’s Darling Saravia, fourth at 126; and Justice’s Dayana Meruvia, fourth at 152.
The fifth-place alternates also included Fairfax’s Lillian Nguyen-Hoffpauir at 145, Langley’s Sopha Song at 100, Lewis’ Carmen Trejo at 235 and West Potomac’s Selena Zheng at 185.
