A driver was killed Thursday morning when a tree fell onto a moving vehicle on the George Washington Parkway in McLean, according to U.S. Park Police.

The incident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. near Donaldson Run and Virginia State Route 123. Police said the driver was the vehicle’s only occupant. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Authorities closed the parkway in both directions for several hours while officers investigated the fatal crash. The closure stretched between VA-123, also known as Chain Bridge Road, and Spout Run Parkway.

The shutdown affected all lanes along that section of the George Washington Parkway through the morning and into the afternoon. A U.S. Park Police spokesperson said the entire roadway reopened at approximately 2 p.m., nearly six and a half hours after the tree struck the vehicle.
