Fairfax County Public Schools is working to secure Purple Star recognition for every school in the division by the 2026-27 school year, expanding support for more than 13,500 military-connected students.

Virginia awards Purple Star Division status when 100% of a district’s schools earn or maintain the state’s Purple Star Designation. The program recognizes schools that excel in welcoming and supporting students whose families are connected to military service.

FCPS currently has 96 Purple Star Schools. About 95 schools are expected to earn or renew the designation this year, bringing the division close to having 75% of its schools recognized.

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid announced the divisionwide goal in fall 2024. She said military service affects entire families and described the designation as a way to foster an inclusive, welcoming environment for all students, regardless of how many military-connected children attend a school.

Reaching 100% participation will require Purple Star status at more than 200 FCPS schools. The Office of Family and School Partnerships is assisting schools that are new to the application process and helping staff better understand military culture.

Schools are also highlighting their support during the Month of the Military Child. Daniels Run Elementary School, one of the division’s Purple Star Schools, created a display recognizing military-connected students in April.

The effort aligns with the FCPS 2023-30 Strategic Plan’s goal of creating safe and positive schools where students feel supported, included, empowered and connected to their communities.
