Fairfax County Public Schools said interim findings from an external investigation indicate allegations involving Centreville High School in 2021 are likely untrue.
A teacher publicly alleged in early August that people at the school had previously encouraged, facilitated and paid for student abortions without parental knowledge or consent. Superintendent Michelle C. Reid responded two days later, saying such conduct would be unacceptable in FCPS.
The allegations prompted Gov. Glenn Youngkin to direct Virginia State Police to open a criminal investigation. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the U.S. Department of Education also requested information from the school system.
On Oct. 16, FCPS submitted detailed responses to the Senate committee and Education Department through outside legal counsel to meet their deadlines. The school system also provided those responses to Virginia State Police.
FCPS said its external investigation remains underway but has uncovered information offering a clearer account of what occurred. Based on the interim findings, the district described the allegations as deeply concerning but likely untrue, adding that it has an obligation to protect employees from wrongful and unjustified accusations.
The district said it continues to cooperate with the government investigations while working to ensure students have a safe, healthy and supportive learning environment.
