Fairfax County Public Schools families face several important June deadlines as the district prepares for summer meals, learning programs and the 2026-27 academic year.
Caregivers and FCPS employees are scheduled to receive unique links to the FCPS Calendar Survey by email on Friday, June 5. Responses are due by 11:59 p.m. Monday, June 22.
Individual answers will remain confidential. Only combined, summary-level findings will be presented to the Fairfax County School Board. Anyone who does not receive a link or encounters technical problems should contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation.
Student achievements span scholarships, technology and journalism
Eight students from six FCPS high schools have won 2026 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They join 31 students who received other corporation awards and nine recipients of National Merit Corporate-Sponsored Scholarships.
Chantilly High School student Meghana Nannapaneni earned first place in Fairfax County’s 10th annual Shark Tank Technology Challenge for Sage4Health, an application designed to address cognitive decline and social isolation among older adults.
The regional competition asks high school students to develop practical, compassionate assistive technologies or mobile applications for older adults and people with disabilities.
Jeremy, a graduating Woodson High School senior, has also turned classroom training into professional experience. After completing an Introduction to Nursing course and earning his Certified Nursing Assistant credential, he enrolled in the EMT program at Falls Church Academy. He now works part time at a local nursing and rehabilitation center while finishing high school.
Graduating seniors Zoe of Annandale High School and Lizzie of Chantilly High School were also recognized for using journalism, leadership and community service to share other people’s stories.
At Bull Run Elementary School, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid recently highlighted the Charger STRONG framework, which promotes safety, thoughtfulness, respect, ownership, neatness and generosity.
Educate Fairfax, meanwhile, awarded a record $91,500 through 47 scholarships to students from 18 FCPS high schools during its second annual Beyond the Tassel celebration.
Summer Extravaganza brings STEM, animals and food trucks to Woodson
FCPS will hold its free Summer Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Woodson High School.
The family event will feature hands-on STEM and arts experiences, robotics demonstrations, a petting zoo and food trucks. Families can also explore learning resources and meet FCPS offices and community partners.
Early arrivals may have an opportunity to meet Reid and ask her to sign their yearbooks. Registration and additional information are available through the Summer Extravaganza webpage.
Families can find more seasonal activities, camps, safety information and health resources in the FCPS Summer Resource Guide. The district’s Summer Learning webpage also offers ideas for keeping students engaged until August, with more resources expected to be added during the summer.
Registration closes Friday, June 5, for FCPS summer camps and enrichment opportunities, including Career and Technical Education camps, Institute for the Arts programs and Production Camp.
The third annual FCPS Puzzle Hunt is also open to participants of all ages. Along with creative problem-solving activities, the hunt teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety and encourages active transportation.
Free summer meals start June 22
No-cost student meals will be available beginning Monday, June 22, at designated FCPS Summer Food Service Program locations. Meals will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and students must eat on site.
With support from Educate Fairfax, families may also receive one free breakfast and lunch for each adult at Braddock, Dogwood, Glen Forest, Hutchison, Hybla Valley and London Towne elementary schools.
FCPS expects to add more meal sites and advises families to check the Summer Food Service Program webpage regularly.
Immunization events will carry no out-of-pocket cost
Inspire Health Alliance and FCPS will offer school-required immunizations during the summer at no out-of-pocket cost to students or families.
Families must provide insurance information when applicable, but uninsured students may still participate. Dates, locations and registration details will be posted on the FCPS and Inspire Health Alliance Student Immunization Events webpage. Additional dates are expected to appear four to five weeks before each event.
Families urged to clear meal balances
With the school year ending, families are being asked to review their students’ MySchoolBucks accounts and pay any outstanding meal charges.
Households earning less than 185% of the federal poverty level may qualify for free and reduced-price meals, but they must submit a new application each school year. Families with an existing balance who believe they qualify can still complete an application for the 2025-26 year. The 2026-27 application will become available this summer.
Early dismissal marks final day of school
Wednesday, June 17, is the last day of classes and will follow an abbreviated schedule.
High schools will operate from 8 to 10 a.m., while secondary schools will run from 8:10 to 10:10 a.m. Middle and elementary schools will dismiss two hours early, with exact times available from individual schools.
The 2026-27 school year begins Monday, August 24. The final regular FCPS weekly newsletter of the current academic year is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10.
Families and staff can share graduation and promotion ceremony photos on Facebook or Instagram by tagging FCPS and their school and using the hashtag #FCPSgrad26. Graduation schedules and school social-media directories are available online.
Scholarships, reading and public-safety programs open this summer
FCPS Adult and Community Education will accept applications from Monday, June 15, through Saturday, August 15, for $1,000 scholarships toward certified apprenticeship classes in the electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades. The awards can be applied to FCPS ACE Trades Apprenticeship courses beginning in the fall.
The Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Adventure will run from Wednesday, June 17, through Wednesday, August 19, offering participants opportunities to earn prizes.
A free Children’s Summer Reading Festival is also scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Fairfax County Government Center. Activities will include games, crafts, face painting, snacks and a bounce house.
The Fairfax County Police Department is offering several summer programs for students and young adults interested in public safety. Participants can explore law-enforcement careers, leadership, technology, teamwork and police training through activities and conversations with officers.
