A vehicle fire inside an attached garage rapidly spread through a Crosspointe home Friday, causing an estimated $206,199 in damage and sending seven people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue crews responded around 2 p.m. March 7 to the 8300 block of Ivy Green Road after receiving reports of a garage fire. Arriving firefighters encountered heavy flames spreading quickly and called for a second alarm.
Four occupants were inside when one heard a loud, explosion-like sound from the garage. He investigated, discovered the fire and joined the other occupants in evacuating the home and calling 911.
Firefighters launched an immediate attack while confirming everyone had escaped. Crews worked extensively to bring the blaze under control.
The house had functioning smoke alarms, but their location meant they did not activate until after an occupant had already discovered the fire.
Five civilians and two firefighters were transported with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The occupants accepted assistance from the Red Cross.
Investigators determined that the fire began in the attached garage, with a vehicle identified as the preliminary cause.
