Firefighters battled a heavily involved barn fire in the 200 block of Walker Road in Great Falls on Wednesday night. Because hydrants were limited, crews established tanker shuttle operations. All occupants and animals escaped safely.

Congressional lawmakers are seeking answers about a massive sewage spill in the Potomac River. Officials involved in the cleanup testified Wednesday that they responded quickly after a pipe burst and that public health was never at risk, but lawmakers remain concerned about the spill’s effects and whether it could have been prevented.

Police have identified the motorcyclist killed in a Tuesday, May 19, crash as Mikhail Perry, 22, of Fairfax. Detectives preliminarily determined that Perry was riding north on Route 29 on a 2005 Ducati when he collided with a semi truck making a U-turn. Police said the motorcyclist’s speed was a factor.

Virginia’s revenue continues to exceed forecasts, potentially giving lawmakers more flexibility as they negotiate a stalled state budget. Secretary of Finance Mark Sickles said Tuesday that the stronger-than-expected collections come as the state economy shows strain from slower job growth, rising inflation and weakening consumer confidence.

Virginia also recorded one of the country’s steepest year-over-year declines in overdose deaths, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Commissioner for Behavioral Health Daryl Washington credited expanded access to naloxone and treatment programs.

Fairfax County animal services officers recently rescued an osprey reported trapped in fishing line. The bird had freed itself by the time an officer arrived but appeared to have been injured during the struggle.

Metro is being highlighted in a National Museum of American History exhibit tied to celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary. A mural features destinations in Washington, Maryland and Virginia that can be reached by Metrorail and Metrobus, while a special map connects the transit network with sites important to American history.

Westminster School’s new Griffin Field turf project is nearly complete. The independent private school, located at 3819 Gallows Road in Annandale, plans to hold a ribbon-cutting celebration in October. Westminster serves students from preschool through middle school.

A restaurant is seeking an ABC license for on- and off-premise alcohol sales. Objections may be submitted within 30 days.

Thursday’s forecast calls for showers and a possible thunderstorm, with a 90% chance of rain and a high near 67 degrees. Rain chances will fall to 60% overnight, when cloudy skies and a low around 54 are expected. Northeast winds will range from 7 to 10 mph.
