A kayaker rescued from the Potomac River near Great Falls on Sunday afternoon died at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Emergency crews from Fairfax and Montgomery counties responded around 2 p.m. on May 3 after three people reportedly became separated from their boats.
In Groveton, Fairfax County firefighters battled a house fire shortly after 11 a.m. Monday in the 6500 block of Enfield Drive. Crews found heavy flames coming from a single-family home, but all occupants had escaped before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported, and investigators are working to determine the cause.
Fairfax County police also released the first results from the “Road Shark” traffic-enforcement campaign conducted with Virginia State Police. Between April 20 and 26, officers and troopers issued 781 speeding citations, 294 reckless-driving citations and 244 citations for hands-free law violations.

Two small dogs found walking together in Fairfax City on Sunday have been reunited with their family. City police initially directed anyone seeking to claim the dogs to the Fairfax County Animal Services campus at 4500 West Ox Road before announcing their return Tuesday afternoon.
A new weekend shuttle between the King Street Metro station and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate will begin Friday, May 8. Round-trip tickets will cost $10, with service operating Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June.
Visitors to the National Mall will soon find upgraded food options. A new National Park Service concessions operator plans to turn the Mall’s eight kiosks into distinct café concepts, including locations themed around nearby museums and monuments, and deploy 25 food carts by Memorial Day.
