Fairfax County Public Schools will open two hours late Thursday, Feb. 6, as snow, sleet and freezing rain threaten to create hazardous morning conditions.

All athletics and other activities at FCPS schools or on school grounds Wednesday evening must end by 9 p.m. The cutoff applies to extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, recreation programs and community use by outside groups.

A Winter Weather Advisory for the Washington region will be in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service said the storm could produce up to 1 inch of snow and sleet, along with ice ranging from a light glaze to one-tenth of an inch.

Light sleet was expected Wednesday evening, followed by freezing rain and sleet after midnight. Rain could mix in near and east of Interstate 95 before temperatures rise Thursday morning and the precipitation changes to rain.

The Virginia Department of Transportation began treating bridges, ramps and overpasses Tuesday. Crews planned to mobilize again Wednesday night to address icy roads.

VDOT urged residents to limit travel Wednesday night and postpone Thursday morning trips when possible. Drivers who must travel should carry emergency supplies and leave room for first responders and road crews.

Fairfax County government offices will open on schedule Thursday. County employees may take unscheduled leave, while teleworkers are expected to work remotely or use personal leave. Emergency personnel should report as scheduled.

Under the FCPS delay, central offices will open to the public at 10 a.m. Morning special education preschool classes and morning field trips are canceled.

Afternoon preschool will follow its regular schedule. Full-day special education preschool and Early Head Start and Pre-K classes will begin two hours late.

Morning transportation for high school academy classes is canceled, but transportation will be available for academy classes beginning after 12:45 p.m.

Adult High School and GED courses will start two hours late. Adult and Community Education classes will begin on time, while homebound and home-based instruction will start at 10 a.m.

School Age Child Care centers will open at 8 a.m.
