A kayaker died after three men were swept into the Potomac River near Great Falls on Sunday, prompting a response from rescue crews in Maryland and Virginia.
All three men fell into the water and managed to reach the Virginia shoreline on their own, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer.
Montgomery County and Fairfax County fire and rescue crews were dispatched around 2 p.m. One of the kayakers was unconscious and had life-threatening injuries.
First responders resuscitated the man at the scene before transporting him by boat for medical care. He was later pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Piringer said officials believe the men were boating around Great Falls when they became caught in hydraulic currents. He warned that low water levels had made some parts of the river treacherous.
Police will conduct a death investigation.
