Langley led from start to finish Wednesday night, using a decisive 16-0 run to defeat host Washington-Liberty, 53-38, in a key Liberty District girls basketball game on Jan. 15.
The Saxons improved to 11-3 overall and remained atop the district standings with a 5-0 record.
Langley opened with a 7-0 surge and held an 11-5 advantage after the first quarter. Washington-Liberty narrowed the margin to 15-14 before the Saxons scored 16 unanswered points across the second and third quarters, taking command with a 31-14 lead.
Senior Anya Rahman, a 1,000-point career scorer, paced Langley with 19 points, including four three-pointers. She added four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Rahman made four of five shots in the second half, sinking three from beyond the arc.
Freshmen Alice Allen and Mariah Armah scored 14 points apiece. Allen collected five rebounds, while Armah grabbed three. Senior forward Peyton Daley finished with eight rebounds and two assists, and junior Maddie Shamloo contributed six points and two assists.
The loss dropped Washington-Liberty to 2-2 in district play. The Generals, Saxons and unbeaten McLean Highlanders, who are 3-0 in the district, are expected to contend for the league championship.
Langley will visit McLean for a 5:45 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The Saxons entered Wednesday’s game after defeating Marshall, 50-35, in their previous district contest.
