The Langley Saxons held off a late Yorktown rally for a 40-33 road victory Jan. 10, improving to 3-0 in Liberty District girls basketball and 9-3 overall.
Langley led from start to finish but never managed to put the Patriots away. The Saxons were ahead 7-2 after the first quarter and carried an 18-14 advantage into halftime.
Yorktown narrowed the gap to 35-33 late in the fourth quarter before Langley shut down the comeback. Alice Allen scored on a drive and added a free throw, extending the lead to 38-33.
Anya Rahman then made a steal and sank two free throws with nine seconds remaining to secure the win. Yorktown did not score again after pulling within two points.
The matchup was Langley’s first since a Dec. 31 non-district loss to St. John’s.
Langley’s two previous district victories were more comfortable: 58-21 over Herndon and 69-40 against Wakefield.
Rahman scored 21 points in the Herndon win, while Mariah Armah added 12 and Allen finished with nine. Maddie Shamloo contributed six points, five rebounds and five assists.
Against Wakefield, Rahman led with 17 points, Allen scored 16 and Ali Glantzis added 10.
The Saxons are scheduled to face Marshall and Washington-Liberty in district play this week. Langley, Washington-Liberty and McLean are expected to be the Liberty District’s leading contenders this season.
