ArtsFairfax is seeking a professional artist or team to create a permanent sculpture for the grounds of the Lorton police station and animal shelter.
The artwork is intended to reflect hospitality, safety and community engagement at the new facility. Its high-traffic location will also give the selected artist’s work significant public visibility.
Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck said the sculpture should welcome residents while celebrating the community and the essential Fairfax County services provided at the site. He also described public art as a way to strengthen local identity, beautify public spaces and encourage learning.
The opportunity is open to professional artists throughout the United States, with preference given to local and regional applicants. Representatives from the Lorton community and government will participate in the selection process.
The project has a budget of up to $50,000 covering semifinalist support, materials, installation and payment for the chosen artist.
Applicants must demonstrate experience completing installations of a similar scope, scale and budget. Submissions are due through Submittable by 7 p.m. on June 20.
