A district change has done little to cool the annual battle between the Marshall Statesmen and Wakefield Warriors for boys basketball supremacy.
Now in their fourth straight season as Liberty District members, both teams are again expected to contend for first place, with the Yorktown Patriots also emerging as a title threat.
Wakefield captured the regular-season championship last winter, finishing ahead of second-place Marshall. The previous season, Marshall won the title while Wakefield tied for third. In 2021-22, the Statesmen placed second behind Washington-Liberty, with the Warriors taking third.
Before joining the Liberty District, Marshall and Wakefield frequently traded championships as National District rivals.
“The games with Wakefield are always hard and close,” Marshall coach Jerry Lin said.
The teams split two tight contests last season. One came in the district tournament final, where Marshall prevailed by six points.
“Marshall is very disciplined and always plays us tough — and we play them tough,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said. “We expect the same this season.”
Marshall enters the latest race as the two-time defending Liberty tournament champion after also finishing second in the 2021-22 tournament.
The Statesmen are 7-4 overall and 1-1 in district play, while Wakefield is 5-4 and 1-0. They have not yet faced each other this season but are scheduled to meet twice in district play this month.
Yorktown is also 1-0 in the district after edging Marshall 59-57.
