Two Fairfax County high schools earned top honors in the 2025-26 Virginia Army National Guard Cup competition, the school division announced Monday.

McLean High School received the Academic Activities Cup for the first time, while Robinson Secondary School won the Athletics Cup for the third time in four years and fifth time overall.

The Virginia High School League awards the cups based on a points system that tracks schools’ performance in state competitions and activities throughout the school year.

For athletics, schools earn points through sanctioned sports as well as sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity. Academic activity points come from competitions in Scholastic Bowl, creative writing, theatre, speech, debate, film festival, broadcast, online news, newspaper, magazine, newsmagazine, yearbook, robotics, and esports.

“The National Guard Cup for Academic Activities is a celebration of our students’ curiosity, creativity, and commitment to learning,” McLean High School Principal Raven Jones said in a statement. “From academic teams to performing arts and scholastic competitions, our students continually challenge themselves to grow.”

Robinson Secondary School Principal Tracey Phillips said the athletics recognition reflects the dedication of student-athletes, coaches, staff, and families.

“What makes Robinson special is that our students compete with determination while supporting one another and representing our school with integrity,” Phillips said.
