More Than 1,000 Volunteers Turn MLK Day Into Local Action

More than 1,000 residents marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day by taking part in Volunteer Fairfax’s 17th annual day of service on Monday, Jan. 19.

More than 1,000 residents marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day by taking part in Volunteer Fairfax’s 17th annual day of service on Monday, Jan. 19.

Participants completed 16 projects and activities benefiting communities across Northern Virginia. The work included packing snack and hygiene kits, participating in activities focused on mental health, and giving children hands-on opportunities to learn about volunteering while honoring King’s legacy.

Residents also donated nearly 500 pounds of nonperishable food. The contributions will support clients served by Food for Others.

Volunteer Fairfax CEO Jennifer Williamson said the turnout demonstrated that service extends beyond special occasions. She described volunteerism as “civic infrastructure” that builds trust, strengthens relationships and helps people remain connected across different ages, neighborhoods and backgrounds.

“We didn’t just honor Dr. King’s legacy,” Williamson said. “We practiced it together.”
