Nearly 1,900 Books Head to Northern Virginia School Libraries

Twenty Assistance League of Northern Virginia members recently packed 1,890 books to help local students keep reading through the summer.

Twenty Assistance League of Northern Virginia members recently packed 1,890 books to help local students keep reading through the summer.

The nonprofit’s Literacy for Kids Program will stock Little Libraries at eight schools: Cora Kelly, Dogwood, Garfield, Loch Lomond, Lynbrook, Pine Spring, Sudley and Yorkshire. The age-appropriate titles are intended for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The collection ranges from classics such as “The Trumpet of the Swan” and “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” to popular series including “Wings of Fire” and “Puppy Place.” Students will also find short biographies of American artists, musicians, historical figures and athletes.

Younger students and children enrolled in Head Start, prekindergarten and Special Education/VSI programs will receive books as well. Assistance League members assembled 386 packages containing three books each for those students.

The effort aims to encourage strong reading habits and help children maintain their literacy skills during summer break.
