Northern Virginia faces potentially hazardous weather Wednesday, March 5, as a powerful storm system raises the risk of thunderstorms, damaging wind gusts, hail and possibly one or two tornadoes.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected after 4 p.m. The high will be near 64 degrees, with winds of 15 to 21 mph and gusts reaching 37 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%.
Rain is likely Wednesday night, along with another possible thunderstorm. Temperatures will fall to around 43 degrees as winds shift west after midnight, with gusts up to 22 mph. Hazardous conditions could continue into Thursday, March 6.
ICE operations reported across Northern Virginia
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted multiple operations in Northern Virginia on Monday and Tuesday. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accompanied an ABC News crew during an ICE operation Tuesday morning.
Youngkin’s commutation draws more criticism
The Fairfax County NAACP and Virginia Black Legislative Caucus criticized Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s decision to commute former Fairfax County police Sgt. Wesley Shifflett’s prison sentence.
Shifflett was convicted of recklessly handling a firearm in the fatal shooting of Timothy McCree Johnson. The NAACP said the commutation denied Johnson’s family the justice it had been promised.
Man arrested after Chantilly facility burglary
A 44-year-old Roanoke man has been arrested in connection with a burglary at a Fairfax County facility in the 14000 block of Flint Lee Road in Chantilly.
The break-in was reported at 4:39 a.m. on Feb. 26. The man is being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail while awaiting extradition to Fairfax County.
Bill targets compensation barriers for wrongful convictions
Del. Rip Sullivan, a Fairfax Democrat, is backing legislation addressing compensation for people wrongfully convicted because of fabricated testimony or intentionally withheld evidence.
Virginia law permits additional compensation in such cases, but payments from the commonwealth cannot proceed until the locality agrees to contribute its share. That requirement can prevent compensation from being approved.
Catholic schools plan teacher job fair
Principals from 40 Catholic schools will recruit teachers for preschool through high school positions at a job fair Saturday, March 8.
The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Bernadette School, 7602 Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield.
Vienna sixth graders mentor younger readers
Sixth graders at Cunningham Park Elementary School in Vienna have launched “Cardinals Care for Cardinals,” a mentoring program that helps younger students with reading.
Student Ruth Gaffiney said the idea emerged at the beginning of the school year, when she and her classmates helped first graders log on to computers for the first time.
